The challenge

New fuel regulations required the refiner to cut diesel sulphur to below 10 ppm while increasing throughput. The revamp had to reuse as much existing equipment as possible and fit within a tight plot inside an operating refinery.

Our scope

  • Process simulation and revamp configuration
  • Reactor, exchanger and compressor re-rating
  • FEED P&IDs, plot plans and 3D model
  • HAZOP and SIL studies
  • AACE Class 3 cost estimate and EPC ITB

Our approach

Our process team modelled existing and new cases in Aspen HYSYS to identify the bottlenecks, then worked with mechanical and piping engineers to confirm which equipment could be re-rated rather than replaced.

  • Rigorous re-rating of exchangers in HTRI
  • Plot plan options reviewed with operations
  • HAZOP and SIL workshops closed out within FEED

The outcome

The FEED package supported the refiner's investment decision and went to EPC tender with a firm scope. Reusing existing equipment kept the new-equipment list short and reduced the shutdown duration needed for tie-ins.

Scope of work

  • Process simulation
  • FEED P&IDs
  • Equipment re-rating
  • HAZOP / SIL
  • 3D model
  • Class 3 estimate
  • EPC ITB
